Who We Are
Our Funny Name and What it Stands for
Our family name, Suydam, is Dutch and means “South of the Dam” back in the Netherlands. We settled in America 340 years ago as farmers in what is now Brooklyn, and made our way to Somerset in 1713. And our office on Route 27 is situated on land that has been our family farm since 1826 and adjacent to our original Somerset settlement. So we can honestly say that the Suydam Insurance Agency is an integral part of this area’s history and heritage.
Suydam Insurance is a family business and has been since it began in 1878. Our earliest clients were relatives, friends and neighbors. And the personal touch we developed caring for them has continued to this day. We know that insurance is how people protect their families, their homes and assets, their livelihoods and their futures. We also know it can be overwhelming. So we go out of our way to help you through the process.
Our business operations are still overseen by family members who have grown up in the business. Their passion for taking care of people is why a human being always answers our phones. It’s the reason we regularly assess your coverage for changing regulations, evolving business needs or family changes that might put you at risk. And it’s why so many of our early clients have stayed with us from generation to generation.
